PACKING/MOVING TIPS 101

Packing a box in 6 easy steps:
1. Start with high-quality packing boxes designed for the job. Don't use old spare or grocery boxes. You can purchase packing supplies at our store.
2. Pack heavy items such as books in smaller boxes to make moving them easier.
3. Use wardrobe boxes to hang your garments in.
4. Similar size boxes stack easier then varied sizes
5. Fill boxes completely. If there are empty spaces stuff unprinted newsprint (prevents ink smudge transfers) in them to keep things in place.
6. Seal your boxes with packing tape to keep dust and debris out.

Tips for packing your storage space:
1. Store couches (not sofa-beds) and mattresses on end to maximize space.
2. Protect mattresses and furniture with padding and covers (available from our store). Do not use plastic on wood furniture; humidity may condense on plastic and cause damage.
3. Wrap mirrors, pictures, and artwork with paper and padding. Never store them lying flat.
4. Label the contents of all boxes on multiple sides for easier reference.
5. Disassemble tables and bookcases and store them on their sides. Be sure to wrap and mark all pieces to for convenient re-assembly.
6. Leave a center aisle for easy access to all items. Do not place goods against the unit walls. Leave a 4 inch air space around the unit perimeter to aid in ventilation.
7. Store items you'll need most often at the front of the unit and place valuables toward the rear of the unit.
8. Pack larger and heavier items on the bottom and smaller and lighter items on top.
9. Use shelving to maximize your storage space.
10. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors slightly ajar and clean before storing and don't forget to use the space inside them for extra storage!
11. To retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing machine oil.
12. A small efficiently packed unit will cost less than a larger unit with poorly arranged contents.
13. Check with your insurance agent to see if your homeowners or general casualty policy covers your possessions and inventory while they are being stored (most do at no additional cost if notified).
